Film Screening: A Question of Silence
Sound and listening are inextricably linked. Reflective listening goes beyond mere hearing. For gender studies scholar Sara Ahmed, listening is a way of learning about power relations and violence. In her reflections on feminist listening, she examines the psychological thriller *A Question of Silence* (1982) by Marleen Gorris, which she sees as exemplifying how feminist listening becomes a shared act of expressing solidarity, anger, and concern.
The director’s debut film won awards at the Netherlands Film Festival, among others; upon its release, it immediately became a feminist classic and sparked heated debate due to its ambiguity. Mimosa e.V. is a nonprofit organization in Cologne dedicated to art, music, film, and community; it organizes film screenings on specific themes at various locations in a nomadic manner to create a space for exchange.
