One in eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime, and yet too few people know about it. "Pink October" aims to change this with a focus on education, early detection and prevention.
Gynecologist and breast cancer sufferer Bärbel Grashoff interweaves personal experiences with medical knowledge about living with the disease and, together with illustrator Marie Luisa Kerkhoff, has created a comic that is as sensitive as it is impressive. "Das Ende der Unversehrtheit" (Ankerwechsel) tells an unconventional and colorful story not only about the course of the disease, but also addresses mental health and the role of relatives in this process.
Reyhan Şahin, alias Dr. Bitch Ray, a doctor of linguistics, author of "Yalla, Feminism" and feminist rapper, also faced an existential challenge due to her illness. In "Amazonenbrüste - Wie ich den Brustkrebs bekämpfte" (Klett-Cotta), the eloquent artist describes her journey from diagnosis to chemotherapy to recovery, full of wit and bitch power. It takes resistance, humor and female solidarity, because for cancer, all people are equal.
An evening that educates, encourages and offers space for exchange.
