In the organizer's words:

ABOUT THE OPEN FORM(AT) SHOWING

AFTER THE END

Straddling the line between observation and participation, this format creates a space in which different forms of presence, attention, and community are explored.

The event is also part of the development of the work “After the End,” for which materials, methods, and participatory settings are being developed during the residency. The showing offers insight into an artistic research project that examines choreography as a contemporary form of collective practice. The focus is on the question of how movement, breath, voice, and rhythm can create spaces in which shared experiences emerge—without fixed roles between performers and audience. The event is not intended as a finished presentation, but rather as an open experimental framework. Visitors are invited to familiarize themselves with individual methods and working approaches and—on a voluntary basis—to become part of the research themselves. Together, participants will experiment with simple choreographic structures, movement sequences, vocal exercises, and ritualistic actions that emerge in the moment and are shaped by those involved. How can choreographic structures become shared experiences?

Somewhere between a performance and collaborative experimentation, simple movement, breathing, and vocal practices emerge that make collective presence tangible. No prior experience is required.

ABOUT

SAMP AND BEANS WITH MY AUNT

In an intimate stage setting modeled after a shared family meal, the stories of the Born Frees—the generations born after the end of apartheid—come to life.

Apartheid was a system of institutionalized racial segregation enforced by the white minority from 1948 to 1994 that established the following ethnic categories: Whites, Asians, Indians, Coloureds, and Black South Africans—in precisely that order.

The performance is a physical homage based on intensive research into the life experiences of people of mixed heritage in South Africa during and after apartheid. The work explores the reclaimed term “Colored” and the question of what it means to be of mixed heritage. It unravels conditioned traumas and complexities of identity while simultaneously telling stories of family members who lived under the apartheid regime. In doing so, the piece broadens its perspective beyond South Africa—to shared experiences of people of mixed heritage worldwide.

The piece creates space for joy, grief, reflection, and liberation, expressed through Yasmine’s distinctive movement language: intense physicality, body percussion, and grounded, rhythmic choreography.

ARTISTS

AFTER THE END (SHOWING)

Marje Hirvonen

is a Finnish choreographer, performer, and curator who works in Germany and internationally. In her interdisciplinary practice, she explores the connections between choreography, activism, queerness, collective bodies, and participation in immersive performance formats. She studied at the Cologne University of Music and Dance and at Goldsmiths, University of London. In her work, she combines movement, text, sound, video, and installation to create physically experiential formats that question social and political structures. Her work has been presented internationally, including in the context of documenta fifteen and the Goethe-Institut. She is co-curator of the Theater Orangerie in Cologne.

Bettina Nampé

is a dancer, performer, and dance artist based in Cologne. In her work, she explores the body as a relational and permeable system, as well as the question of how perception, presence, and collective states change through movement, encounter, and spatial constellations. Her artistic practice spans dance, performance, bodywork, and installation-based settings. She often creates open, process-based, and participatory formats that explore collective dynamics, spaces of resonance, and shared experiential processes. In doing so, she combines choreographic, somatic, and interdisciplinary approaches. Since 2009, she has been working as a freelance artist, developing both solo and collaborative works at the intersections of dance, sound, installation, and performance.

Notably, Yasmine presented her work “Confinement” at the Western Province Building in Cape Town and received an award for her production “It’s not what you think, allow me to clarify” at West Off 2025. As a dancer, Yasmine has collaborated with various choreographers and their works. Yasmine is a co-producer at AFIA and the founder of ReIgnite Sessions.
