Defending the freedom of art is one of the fundamental concerns of the Akademie der Künste. Especially in times when social discourse is losing differentiation and empathy, the arts should keep the field of vision open and allow for different, even contradictory perspectives. In a series of events in fall 2024, the Akademie der Künste will explore the philosophical and legal framework of artistic freedom.

At the kick-off event on September 27, Academy President Manos Tsangaris and Academy Vice President Anh-Linh Ngo will host a discussion with Amelie Deuflhard (Kampnagel Director, Hamburg) and other personalities from politics and culture.

They will take a look at the current political plans to introduce clauses and codes of conduct, which testify to a fundamental mistrust. Also in view of the current instrumentalization of cultural funding by the AfD, they ask which elements are essential for artistic freedom and how this can be effectively protected as the core of the free and democratic basic order.
