Director: Frances Scholz
USA 2015, 82 min, OV English with English subtitles
With: Paul Giamatti, Chris Kraus, Lydia van Vogt, Penny Arcade, Andrea Fraser, Leslie Allison, Lily Benson and many more
AMBOY begins when filmmaker Susan Lichtenstein travels to Los Angeles to shoot a documentary about Lydia van Vogt, the widow of science fiction master A.E. van Vogt. She is soon drawn into the mysterious story of the artist Karl Amboy, who disappeared without a trace in the 1990s. A medium warns her urgently about the project, but inspired by a lecture by author and art historian Chris Kraus, she decides to follow the artist's tracks into the Mojave Desert. Meanwhile, in Los Angeles and the desert, numerous female artists die under mysterious circumstances.
In this nomadic montage of horror, literature and music, elements of documentary, fiction and amateur film as well as B-movie aesthetics condense into a seamless hybrid in which the boundaries between fiction and reality become blurred.
In a unique acoustic experience, the film features an eclectic soundtrack with contributions from renowned musicians such as Stephen Malkmus, Holy Shit and Kath Bloom. Much of the music is created on camera during the filming process, creating a dynamic interaction between sound and narrative.
AMBOY is a collective project that opens itself up to external influences and combines principles of inclusion, indie rock and collaboration. Shot and directed by Frances Scholz, who co-wrote the script with science fiction author Mark von Schlegell, the film uses improvised sequences with the participation of Hollywood actors Paul Giamatti, Chris Kraus, Andrea Fraser, Sergej Jensen, Lydia van Vogt, Eleanor Antin, Penny Arcade, Leslie Allison, Lily Benson and many more.
