Anime Cinema: Perfect Blue
In the organizer's words:
The color of illusion is Perfect Blue. One of the best anime films of all time is now playing in theaters! Satoshi Kon’s legendary 1997 psychological thriller from Studio Madhouse is screening in a restored version at the Kino Intimes.
From pop starlet to acclaimed actress—that’s how young Mima envisions her career after leaving the girl group CHAM! But first, the aspiring actress must prove her mettle on the movie set. After delivering only a few lines at a time, Mima is forced to film a rape scene—and to cement her image transformation, she poses for a nude photo shoot with a famous photographer. Not all of her fans are thrilled by this, and she even receives threatening letters. Online, the young woman stumbles upon her “diary,” which chronicles her daily life and reveals details that only she could know. Forced into a role that’s foreign to her, stalked, and following the brutal murder of her screenwriter, Mima increasingly loses her grip on reality. More and more often, she sees visions of another Mima—and the murders in her circle continue as well.
What is really true? Satoshi Kon’s work blends cyberspace, fiction, and reality, dreams and illusions like an artful trompe l’œil painting—a psychological thriller that remains inscrutable until the very end. *Perfect Blue* is the directorial debut of Satoshi Kon, who later captivated audiences and critics worldwide with films such as *Paprika*, *Millennium Actress*, and *Tokyo Godfathers*. Hailed as one of the first animated films with an authentic psychological suspense story, the film received high praise at international film festivals and was released in Japanese theaters in 1998.
