ARE YOU GLAD TO BE IN America?

ARE YOU GLAD TO BE IN America? is a transatlantic power trio: At its core is Simone Magioncalda, a young guitarist from Genoa, Italy, born in 2006. Kenneth Jimenez, who is originally from Costa Rica and now lives in New York City, plays bass, and the band is rounded out by drummer Alfred Vogel, who was born in Vorarlberg in 1972.

The trio takes its name and spirit from James “Blood” Ulmer’s groundbreaking album*Are You Glad to Be in America?* —the 1980 album on which Ulmer fused electric guitar, funk, free jazz, rock, and harmolodic thinking into music that was at once wild, strange, and intensely physical. But the three are not a tribute band: The music of ARE YOU GLAD TO BE IN AMERICA? uses Ulmer’s vocabulary only as a starting point: distorted guitar, elastic bass, broken rhythms, deep grooves, sudden twists, repetitions, noise, and free improvisation all come together here. The members give each other plenty of space; the trio is not viewed as “guitar with a rhythm section,” but rather as a single, constantly evolving organism.
