Poverty in Hamburg has risen significantly over the years and goes hand in hand with precarious living conditions. These include: suboptimal housing conditions, homelessness, poor nutrition, limited healthcare, inadequate or no childcare and unfavorable school and learning environments for children and young people - with far-reaching consequences for those affected, but also with regard to developments in society as a whole.

Poverty makes access to higher education, social networks or contacts and socio-cultural activities more difficult. These disadvantages in turn reduce the chances of improving personal circumstances and can cement or even increase poverty - a vicious circle that manifests itself in a spiral of low educational attainment, poor job prospects, low income and excessive debt.

Poverty has many facets and arises in particular from an interplay of social and economic components that influence each other. However, the tight housing market in Hamburg also plays a significant role: exploding construction and renovation costs, the lack of affordable housing, rising rents and increasing gentrification are noticeably and visibly exacerbating the situation of low-income households. Housing has now become a key driver of poverty and inequality - and is part of the new social question.

The aim of the event is to take a closer look at the complex causes and consequences of poverty - with a particular focus on social, economic and housing policy aspects - and to describe and discuss possible solutions.we look forward to a professional exchange and valuable input!
