FAHNENFLUCHT - If Fahnenflucht ever releases a watered-down, feel-good album, we’ll know that we’ve made it as a society. We’ll have overcome our problems, destroyed racism, defeated capitalism, and everyone will be treated equally. Until that happens, Fahnenflucht will continue to hold up a mirror to our anger and serve us distillations of the zeitgeist across what are now 7 studio albums.

A band that has been an integral part of the German-language punk rock scene since the turn of the millennium has announced their new album, “Molotov Zitrone.” On September 13, 2024, the band—which has been known for 25 years for its incisive lyrics, energetic songs, and gripping live shows, all of which have always been paired with its tireless commitment to political and social issues—released its seventh studio album.

On “Molotov Zitrone,” the band presents a sound that’s fully in step with the year 2024, breaking away from their tried-and-true punk rock foundation and expanding it piece by piece. Musically, Fahnenflucht prove to be extremely versatile: alongside classic, guitar-heavy hardcore punk tracks, there are synthesizer sounds, balalaika, and vocoder—all backed by energetic drums and the typically distinctive vocals of singer Thomas.

This is constructive, well-thought-out, and consistent criticism of the system, politics, capitalism, and society—without any moralizing, but always grounded in reality. This isn’t an anti-attitude born of punk dogma. Fahnenflucht are against pigeonholing and don’t fit into any category themselves. They strike exactly where they’re needed: cutting-edge, relevant, and spot-on.

KEINE AHNUNG - Punk. Leftist. DIY. Formed in 2000 in Cologne’s subcultural scene, the four musicians strive to address substantive political issues without resorting to empty revolutionary romanticism. Musically rooted in old-school punk, they’ve blended the ingredients over the years into a style that’s quite their own. Lyrically, they address social inequality under capitalism and alternatives to it, creative spaces within the scene, the building of left-wing structures, gentrification, right-wing trends in music and society, and occasionally historical topics such as the murders of Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht. In between, you’re guaranteed fun-punk-free songs about past relationships or other personal topics.

FRL. ROTTENMEIER - Frl. Rottenmeier is finally making the kind of music she actually listens to. With melodic punk rock featuring German lyrics, she invites you to sing along. In her lyrics, Miss Rottenmeier takes a sarcastic and biting look at all kinds of everyday situations—big and small—spiced with bursts of dark humor and an arrogant view of the world. The band consists of Sven Rottenmeier (bass), Marius Rottenmeier (guitar), Mattes Rottenmeier (drums), and Jule Rottenmeier (vocals). The four Cologne-based musicians—with influences from Croatia, the Ruhr region, and beyond—harness their tremendous potential to blast posterity with a colorful bouquet of honesty, truths, and grumpiness. After all, everyone needs a mirror held up to their face every now and then.
