The Berlin Conference (November 15, 1884 - February 23, 1885) brought together representatives from thirteen countries of the Global North to agree on access to and control over the flow of vital resources - including diamonds, gold, platinum, copper, cobalt, iron, uranium, bauxite and oil - from the African continent. These mineral resources are essential to our lives, powering our technology, our metabolic processes and the exchange of information in our bodies. They are the lifeblood of our mediumship. This story raises a critical question: Beyond human interests, what else is transmitted and mediated through these colonial exchanges?
Over the course of two semesters, students at the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design (HfG), under the direction of Prof. Filipa César and Prof. Nina Zschocke, researched places, archives, narratives and materials associated with this heritage as part of the "Assembly of Resources" seminar. The students and alumni of the HfG will now present their findings at the opening weekend of DESACTA. COUNTER-SPELLS TO UNRAVEL 140 YEARS OF THE BERLIN CONFERENCE. The exhibition is conceived as an altar on which acoustic, theoretical, performative, communal, material and spiritual offerings will be presented.
This project is funded by the Hauptstadtkulturfonds.
