by Judith Schalansky
Physically speaking, fog is nothing more than clouds. Nevertheless, this white haze appears different: associated with the supernatural and unfathomable, the atmospheric and mysterious, it has a symbolic and performative effect. The Enlightenment can thus be read as the clearing of a clouded state. At the same time, it marked the beginning of the age of steam engines and factory chimneys, in which the clear sky became an anomaly. In the fifth and final contribution to "100 new words for weather", Judith Schalansky develops views on, into and through the fog.
