"Letters from Ruth" is a stirring and moving work of musical theater based on the letters and diaries of the Viennese Jew Ruth Maier between 1933 and 1942. Her writings are part of the UNESCO World Documentary Heritage. The music was written by Grammy-nominated Norwegian composer Gisle Kverndokk.
Ruth Maier, full of longings and dreams, inspired by Vienna's rich cultural life, experiences in the 1930s how the Nazi atrocities put an abrupt end to her carefree existence. She summarized her thoughts and feelings in letters and diaries, expressing the unspeakable. After her escape to Norway in 1939, her artistic expression intensified. There she met the love of her life, the future poet Gunvor Hofmo. Her notes reveal a young woman who reflects with impressive directness on the existential questions of growing up, love and political upheaval. Ruth Maier, often referred to as the Austrian Anne Frank, is still present in Norway today, while she has remained largely unknown in her native Austria and in Germany.
The award-winning team of the Gmunden premiere is now bringing "Letters from Ruth", which won Best Musical at the German Musical Theater Award 2023, to Fürth.
