Ways out of the age of lies
Fake news, deep fakes, attitude journalism: trust in politics, the media and democratic institutions is being put to the test. In her new non-fiction book, Elisa Hoven analyzes the increasing erosion of our social culture of debate - and shows why decisive action is needed now.
Using specific examples from migration policy, the coronavirus pandemic and climate change, Hoven describes how targeted misinformation and one-sided reporting are undermining the foundations of democratic decision-making processes. She calls for clear legal measures, such as a reform of criminal law and binding rules for the digital space, as well as the consistent teaching of media skills.
Elisa Hoven is Professor of Criminal Law and Director of the Institute for Media Law at the University of Leipzig as well as a judge at the Saxon Constitutional Court. She writes regularly for "ZEIT" and "Welt" and is present in the media as an expert. Following her highly acclaimed non-fiction book "Strafsachen", she now presents a highly topical plea for the protection of our open society.
