500 years ago, peasants fought for freedom, justice and a good life - against princes, the church and exploitation. Their uprising was bloodily suppressed - and set the course for modern capitalism.

For many, this sounds like the Middle Ages - but the developments of that time still have an impact today. In "500 Years of Peasant Wars", Florian Hurtig, himself a fruit farmer and creator of a community-supported agriculture, shows how the conflicts of that time still affect us today. He tells the story not as dry school material, but as a living piece of the present and takes us on a journey through the centuries of peasant struggles, a wild ride across five continents. Which struggles for land, property and social justice can be transferred to our time? How do they influence agriculture, nutrition and our treatment of nature, plants and animals?

In our reading, we want to address these questions - and also show how we can produce food locally in a democratic, fair and ecological way. As a foodsharing café, we experience every day how our current food system wastes resources and puts people at a disadvantage. Only by changing our food system can we protect the planet in the face of the climate crisis and secure the livelihoods of all people.
