In 1950s New York, Carol has an unfulfilling marriage with her wealthy husband Harge. She meets Therese, an aspiring photographer who works in a department store and dreams of a better life. On a trip together, an intimate bond develops between them - and eventually they fall in love. However, Harge is unwilling to accept his wife's newfound happiness. He hires a private detective to follow the newly in love couple and gather crucial evidence for the ongoing divorce proceedings. Carol soon has to fight for custody of her beloved daughter. Her husband tries to take it from her by any means necessary. This elegantly and precisely staged Christmas drama tells the story of lesbian love in the midst of a restrictive society.
