Who doesn't know him? Sir Charles Spencer Chaplin, Charlie Chaplin for short. He is probably the most famous comedian in the world. When he received the honorary Oscar for his life's work in Hollywood in 1972, those present clapped for a whole twelve minutes. This season, we are honoring Charlie Chaplin with three different film concerts.
In 1916, Chaplin was commissioned by the Mutual Film Corporation to make several short films. He was even given his own studio for this purpose, the now legendary Lone Star Studio in Hollywood. The resulting twelve films are still considered by many film lovers to be the best Chaplin ever made. They are among his most humorous and creative works and contain bizarre slapstick moments as well as subtle, poetic scenes. In the 1990s, new life was breathed into these classics in the course of digitalization. At the same time, the renowned silent film expert Sir Carl Davis (1936 - 2023) composed new orchestral music, as the original accompaniments were mostly improvised.
In these concerts, the Staatstheater becomes a silent movie theater. The restored masterpieces are shown on the big screen, accompanied by the State Orchestra playing the music live. Immerse yourself in a bygone era and experience a special tribute to Charlie Chaplin and the golden age of cinema.
