What experiences and challenges do Chinese people face in Germany? A discussion by the China Competence Training Center of Humboldt University and Le Monde diplomatique.
Whether in science, culture, gastronomy or business, the Chinese diaspora has long been part of social life in Germany. More and more Chinese are putting down roots here and the stories and motivations that bring them here are increasingly diverse. A new generation of Chinese migrants is looking for a temporary or long-term place between language barriers and everyday racism, between China and Germany.
But the tensions are complex: on the one hand, there are attempts to exert official influence from China, on the other hand, there is growing mistrust on the part of Germany - to the point of general suspicion against people of Chinese origin, for example in academia.
