In its Album of the Week review of "Halo on the Inside" (Matador), the new album by Haley Fohr alias Circuit des Yeux, Der Spiegel wondered whether Depeche Mode now has a female singer. The critic was enthusiastic about the "miraculous and changeable superpowers" of the US musician, whose album was created in late-night sessions between 9 pm and 5 am and who has created a powerful, hedonistic work between dancefloor and postmodern pop anthems from synthesizer experiments and introspective ecstasy. Fohr's songs are steeped in mythological symbolism, dealing with overcoming fear and the ecstatic power of sex, love and melodies. Produced by Andrew Broder (Bon Iver, Moor Mother), Fohr's four-octave voice shows her to be an extremely versatile artist who can both immerse herself in John Carpenter atmospheres ("Canopy of Eden") and musically capture transcendence ("Cathexis"). After concerts with Xiu Xiu and Jenny Hval 10 years ago at Kampnagel, the 36-year-old is now returning with her "grandiose album" (The Quietus).
