ClubJazz: Fabian Dudek / Almost

Focused on an ever-changing goal, the path emerges through a shared balance of freedom and structure: Almost, the new band led by Cologne-based saxophonist and composer Fabian Dudek, features Ruth Goller on electric bass, Felix Hauptmann on piano, and Leif Berger on drums—four distinguished musicians who draw inspiration from Dudek’s uncompromisingly contemporary compositional language to explore new sonic possibilities.
In early 2024, Fabian Dudek was nominated for the German Record Critics’ Award for his album“Protecting A Picture That’s Fading”and for the 2024 German Jazz Award in the “Composition/Arrangement” category for the title track of the same name.“This Every Place”feat. Ingrid Laubrock, Dudek’s latest release, once again demonstrates the urgency of his work and his positioning within the present, where he is energetically carving out a place for himself.
Founded in the summer of 2023, Almost has since distinguished itself as an innovative project within the European music scene through performances at Amsterdam’s Bimhuis and the Tampere Jazz Happening in Finland. In addition, two of Dudek’s compositions will receive their world premieres in 2025:“Empire”(Acht Brücken | Musik für Köln) and“On the steps to the inside of the mind”(Konzerthaus Berlin).
Almost is characterized by flow, sonic diversity, and a balance between composition and improvisation. The four musicians combine their individual strengths into a harmonious overall sound and invite the audience, at every moment of their concerts, to embark on a journey and discover something new along the way.
