Correlates of War

*Correlates of War* is an audiovisual work about war, time, and data. It takes as its starting point historical data on armed conflicts from 1816 to 2016, which is translated into sound and abstract visual structures.

This data is juxtaposed with macrophotographs of surfaces and structures in contemporary Berlin’s urban landscape, in which traces of war, history, and human intervention become visible. This gives rise to further correlations—some direct, some coincidental—between historical events and their material traces in the present.

Data, photographs, and algorithmic processes give rise to rhythms, sounds, and moving visual worlds—a two-hundred-year chronology that is neither narrated nor illustrated, but rather made audible and visible.
