On August 9th, after a brief interruption, the Summer of Craven continues with "The Serpent and the Rainbow" from 1988 starring Bill Pullman. Even if the depiction of voodoo in the film is somewhat questionable, the movie is an important milestone in Wes Craven's career.

Dr. Dennis Alan (Bill Pullman) is commissioned by a pharmaceutical company in Haiti to research the so-called "death drug", which can supposedly bring clinically dead people back to life. He soon comes across clear evidence. He receives support from the doctor Marielle, who repeatedly lends him a helping hand. But the deeper he delves into the matter, the more threatening his research becomes. The search for the legendary powder leads him into the clutches of a powerful voodoo magician who, disguised as a police captain, holds an entire town at bay. Dr. Alan soon finds himself drawn further and further into the maelstrom of voodoo, black magic and supernatural powers. But by the time he realizes what's happening, it's already too late...
