At the center of the evening is the fascinating personality of Annette von Droste-Hülshoff, who in many ways goes far beyond the image of the Biedermeier poetess. Her life and work are characterized by deep ruptures, personal upheavals and the bitter limitations of her time. These aspects lend her work a timeless modernity that reaches far beyond the conventions of her era.

It is precisely these dimensions of Annette von Droste-Hülshoff that are impressively reflected in the music of György Kurtág, one of the most important Hungarian composers of our time. Kurtág's compositions, born of the tension between restriction and expressivity, are tailor-made to illuminate the deep emotional and intellectual levels in Droste-Hülshoff's work.
