In the middle of the French Revolution: the revolutionary leader Danton demands a liberal state and an end to the reign of terror of his former comrade-in-arms and current opponent Robespierre. Robespierre regards Danton's demands as a betrayal of the revolution and has him and his supporters arrested and ultimately executed. In his revolutionary play "Danton's Death", which remains as topical as ever, Georg Büchner poses the question of which means are legitimate in a political struggle as early as 1834. He paints an impressive picture of the struggle for humanity: how far can you go for your ideals?
