A remote farm in the Altmark, four women have lived here in succession over the decades - Alma (Hanna Heckt), Erika (Lea Drinda), Angelika (Lena Urzendowsky) and Nelly (Zoe Baier). Each of them spent their childhood and youth in this place. The story spans over a century, from the German Empire to the Second World War and the GDR of the 1980s to the present day. All four have their memories and there are hardly any happy ones; instead, repressed and traumatic memories are passed down through the generations. Standing in the middle of life, the ground is repeatedly pulled out from under the protagonists' feet - the international title of the film "Sound of Falling" is actually much more appropriate. Director Mascha Schilinski unfolds her narrative with flashbacks and flash-forwards, in associative spurts. It can happen that the camera suddenly ends up in a different era in an uninterrupted circle through the hallway, kitchen and parlors. All of this is presented in picturesque soft colors and grainy images, in the classic 4:3 format. Mascha Schilinski was awarded the Jury Prize at this year's Cannes Film Festival for her epic work.
