An empty building. An exhibition. A neighborhood under the microscope.

For most people in Bremen, the Bahnhofsvorstadt is simply a place people pass through—on the way to work, to catch a train, or on the way home. But it’s also a place of conflict and of turning a blind eye.

Perhaps not as loud or famous as Frankfurt’s Bahnhofsviertel, but it, too, tells stories. Of failure and trying. Of addiction and help. Of the unfulfilled dreams of modern urban planning. Of vacant spaces and the hope for a major investment.

What structures ensure that the Bahnhofsvorstadt remains as it is?

Who is trying to help? And who benefits from the situation?

What would change if we took a closer look?

That’s exactly what the Bahnhofsvorstadt Data Atlas does: ask questions and reveal connections that aren’t visible at first glance. Investigate, interview, research, visualize.

From September 24 to October 4, 2026, the former Sparkasse branch on Dobben will serve as an exhibition space. Featuring maps and visualizations, archival finds, voices from the neighborhood, guided tours, and discussions.

Drawing on her research project “Wohnen mit Klasse” (Living in Style), Rosanna Umbach will discuss urban planning, gentrification, commodification, and homelessness from a perspective critical of classism, drawing connections to the Bahnhofsvorstadt neighborhood.
