Der aufhaltsame Aufstieg des Arturo Ui
Münster
In the organizer's words:
Bertolt Brecht’s grand historical gangster spectacle.
“The womb from which that crawled is still fertile,” Bertolt Brecht concludes his eerie and prescient parable about the rapid rise of a fascist gangster. Arturo Ui is the leader of a criminal gang and exploits the economic crisis of a cauliflower trust to present himself as a savior. Through intimidation, murder, and manipulation of the justice system, he eliminates his opponents until he rises to power seemingly unstoppably. Bertolt Brecht describes how past and future dictators become possible through fear and corruption, but also through a society’s willingness to look the other way: “We need people here who are not only willing / To remain silent for us, but also to speak / For us—and loudly!”
