Christoph Heinrich Kniep, Goethe's draughtsman in Sicily: this is the function in which the artist, born in Hildesheim in 1755, is primarily known today. But Kniep was much more than that. The lecture will trace his life's journey, which led from Hamburg to Rome to the German artists' community there, and finally to Naples, where Kniep lived and worked for forty years. His journey together with Goethe is illuminated, as is his work in Rome and Naples. We get to know an artist whose modesty made him take a back seat to his more famous colleagues: Today, his work is receiving the attention it deserves.
