Curator-led tour of the exhibition “Bilderkosmos #3: Leipzig in Dialogue with Jenny Graser”

The exhibition is cross-media in nature: graphics and photography are integrated on a three-month rotation. Also on view for the first time are works that have not been exhibited for a long time—such as those by Karl-Heinz Adler and Irmgard Horlbeck-Kappler—as well as recent acquisitions and donations of 20th- and 21st-century paintings.

The chronologically organized tour begins with works by Leipzig-born Max Beckmann. His distinctive leitmotif—capturing the metaphysical nature of reality behind its outward appearance—resonates in a special way with the MdbK’s collection, which, in the 20th and 21st centuries, focuses on figurative and narrative visual arts with a tendency toward the allegorical. The room dedicated to Max Beckmann is followed by a presentation of modern art, which is represented at the MdbK by outstanding individual works. 

Seven of the ten rooms in *Bilderkosmos #3* are dedicated to art from the GDR. The exhibition showcases its diversity, as well as its struggle with political conditions and its place in the midst of the Cold War. Art from the GDR is permeated by ambivalence and contradictions, which are explored in individual thematic rooms. Embedded within these presentations are leaps into the immediate present through selected works from the 21st century. Contemporary art is fully on display in the central atrium on the third floor. The local art scene, represented by former professors and students of the Academy of Visual Arts in Leipzig (HGB)—including Neo Rauch, Henriette Grahnert, Franziska Holstein, David Schnell, and Matthias Weischer, is expanded in dialogic settings to include perspectives that extend beyond Leipzig and emphasize the national and international interconnectedness of the arts. On view are works by André Butzer, Adrian Ghenie, Katharina Grosse, Karolina Jabłońska, and Cornelia Schleime.
