President Donald Trump is focusing on maximum disruption in foreign policy in his second term of office. In order to achieve a "better deal", he is jeopardizing the successful partnerships with the countries of the West. However, the liberal international order of the West contributed significantly to the history of prosperity and peace in the second half of the 20th century. Trump's demands for a different trade and defense policy are a particular challenge for Europe. In terms of security policy, Trump is threatening the USA with withdrawal and in terms of trade policy with protectionism. Punitive tariffs on European goods are intended to create investment and jobs in the USA. Trump is also using the tariffs as a means of exerting pressure to achieve his foreign policy goals.
How can Europe - and the EU in particular - respond appropriately to the disruption from Washington? What consequences will the shake-up in trade relations have for Europe? Our high-level panel will address these and other questions.
