The unsuccessful writer Paul Laval (Michel Piccoli) receives a lucrative offer to revise the script of an ongoing film project. The arrogant American producer Jeremy Prokosch is not satisfied with the work of director Fritz Lang (played by Fritz Lang himself). With his high-handed attitude, Prokosch then makes advances to Laval's beautiful wife. Camille (Brigitte Bardot) feels abandoned by her husband and a destructive power play about love and jealousy develops, which causes the relationship to break down.

Based on the novel of the same name by Alberto Moravia, DIE VERACHTUNG was one of the few commissioned works in Godard's oeuvre. Against the backdrop of the marital drama, he created a film about filmmaking and the conflict between artistic freedom and commerce. The exterior shots around the famous villa of the writer Curzio Malaparte on Capri are overwhelming.
