Die verschwiegenen Toten. Todesopfer rechter Gewalt seit 1990 in Leipzig

In the organizer's words:

Panel discussion and exhibition by the Leipzig Anti-Racism Initiative and “Racism Kills!” Leipzig, starting Tuesday, September 15, 2026, at the Leipzig Museum of City History, Old City Hall

Right-wing violence is not a marginal phenomenon. Racist attacks in Solingen, Mölln, Rostock-Lichtenhagen, Hoyerswerda, and Leipzig-Grünau in the 1990s serve as a reminder of this. In more recent history, the NSU murders and the right-wing terrorist attacks in Hanau and Halle have drawn particular attention. In Germany, various initiatives have documented at least 224 fatalities resulting from right-wing violence since 1990—in Leipzig, there have been nine fatalities and one suspected case since then.

Right-wing murders are not random crimes. They are the result of misanthropic views in which people are devalued and dehumanized based on their origin, skin color, sexual orientation, or social status. The perpetrators often act within a climate that encourages acts of violence and even downplays their severity. The exhibition explores the background of the crimes in Leipzig, including prejudices against the victims and their surviving relatives, and addresses how these cases have been depoliticized and trivialized.

At the panel discussion on Tuesday, September 15, at 6 p.m. , representatives of the Anti-Racism Initiative—who developed the exhibition “Victims of Right-Wing Violence in Leipzig” in 2013, as well as those who have revised it today, will discuss right-wing violence in Leipzig since 1990 and practices of political remembrance.

The exhibition is open to the public free of charge from September 16 through October 31, 2026, Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Old City Hall of the Leipzig City History Museum.

The event is a collaboration between the Anti-Racism Initiative, “Racism Kills!” – Leipzig, and the Leipzig City History Museum.
