When jazz pianist and composer Clara Haberkamp met Iranian cellist and composer Atena Eshtiaghi in Hamburg in 2022, DUO AZADI was born. Azadi means freedom in Persian - a word that carries the spirit of their music. Their work is based on open forms, improvisation beyond stylistic boundaries and a fearless search for new worlds of sound.
Both artists were born in 1989, a year marked by the fall of the Berlin Wall and the dawn of new possibilities. This shared birth year connects them deeply to the idea of liberation - a theme that shapes both their lives and their artistic vision.
Her music interweaves complex rhythms with the gentle gestures of late Romanticism and a jazz-based approach, creating sonic spaces in which traditions dissolve and new stories can be told. Ancient Persian rhythm cycles and quarter tones meet modern jazz harmonies, allowing thought and sound to flow freely.
Their first piece, Overflow, is dedicated to the courageous women of Iran during the Zan, Zendegi, Azadi (Women, Life, Freedom) revolution. In every note, Eshtiaghi and Haberkamp express their longing for independence, dignity and a peaceful world.
