Book presentation, talk
Safi Faye Room

A Pedagogy of Travesti Movements is a seminal work that unravels the complex relationships between pedagogy, identity and the socio-political movements surrounding the Brazilian travesti community. In a series of chapters, the book highlights pedagogical concepts of travesti movements that challenge traditional educational paradigms and advocate for visibility, empowerment and the joys of marginalized identities. HKW is publishing extended English and German translations of this groundbreaking book from 2022. They are the first publications in the School of Quilombismo.
On the occasion of the presentation of the publications at HKW, Maria Clara Araújo dos Passos will be in conversation with a panel of guests and the audience. What can European democracies learn from the struggles of the Brazilian travesti movements? What strategies can education use to lead to gender euphoria? By linking a historical view of the travesti liberation movements in Brazil with the author's academic and activist experiences, the subsequent discussion will shed light on points of contact and differences to German discourses on trans* realities. The discussion will also seek to shed light on moments of euphoria resulting from the shift towards self-determined gender identities.
Before the talk, the film Pedagogias da Navalha (A Pedagogy of the Razor (2023) will be shown, TRAVAMOLOTOV (dir.: Alma Flora, Colle Christine, Tiana Santos), 15' 44", Portuguese with English subtitles.
