Energieträger Wasserstoff – unverzichtbar für die Energiewende

When it comes to the energy transition, we often hear about "green hydrogen". But what is behind it - and where is its use really worthwhile? In order to use hydrogen as an energy carrier, water has to be split into its components - an energy-intensive process. Water electrolysis is only environmentally friendly if the electricity required for it comes from renewable energy sources. Currently, it often comes from fossil sources.

Green hydrogen has many potential applications - in mobility, for example. Its use always makes sense when other options, such as battery-electric drive concepts, reach their technical limits. Examples include heavy goods vehicles, aviation and shipping. Industry will also rely on green hydrogen in the future: both the chemical sector and the steel industry can become more climate-friendly as a result. Last but not least, hydrogen also plays an important role in large-scale energy storage and can bridge times of low wind and sunshine - the so-called dark doldrums - in the future.

Speaker: Prof. Dr.-Ing. Richard Hanke-Rauschenbach is Professor of Electrical Energy Storage Systems and Head of the Institute for Electrical Energy Systems at LUH. His research focuses on energy storage, water electrolysis and the design of renewable energy systems.
