Takumi and his daughter Hana live in the village of Mizubiki near Tokyo. They lead a
modest life in harmony with nature and appreciate the seclusion. However, their peace is disturbed when a company from Tokyo unveils plans to build a glamping facility nearby. It soon becomes clear that the luxury campsite will have serious consequences for the ecological balance of the region and the lives of the villagers. To smooth things over, the company sends two representatives to Mizubiki. But instead of a solution, the conflict leads to a situation with far-reaching consequences - for everyone.
Following his Oscar-winning film "Drive My Car", Ryusuke Hamaguchi's EVIL DOES NOT EXIST is a poetic parable about the complex relationship between man and nature. This subtly and precisely told film proves once again that Hamaguchi is one of the most exciting voices in independent cinema. The film was made in close collaboration with composer Eiko Ishibashi, also from Japan, who was previously responsible for the musical score of "Drive My Car". Newcomers Hitoshi Omika as Takumi and 9-year-old Ryo Nishikawa as his daughter Hana star as father and daughter in EVIL DOES NOT EXIST.
