Together with the DBV Charlottenburg basketball club, the Berlin Fair Trade Action Alliance is hosting a Fair Trade Game Day on September 13 at the Sömmeringhalle. At 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m., the girls’ U12 team and the women’s team will play their Oberliga games in front of a home crowd. The home teams will wear special uniforms on the court.

The new jerseys and shorts are part of a Berlin-wide collaboration between the Senate Department for the Interior and Sports, the Berlin State Sports Federation, the alliance partner Better Nice Cool, and the Berlin Fair Trade Action Alliance. They were manufactured under fair conditions in Portugal, are made of recycled polyester, and fall under the category of on-demand production—exactly as many items were produced as were needed. On the final day of the Women’s Basketball World Cup in September, this will serve as a visible symbol of fair trade and sustainable sports apparel in Berlin.

In addition, we’ll be on-site with two of our ambassadors, engaging with people about fair working conditions and trade relations. Through the low-barrier approach of our “Wheel of Fortune,” people of all ages will be excited to ask questions about fair trade in sports and, with a little luck, win the grand prize: a Fairtrade-certified basketball.
Fairness also comes into play when it comes to food and drink. We’re supported by alliance partner and fair trade shop sophiefair, which will provide fair trade food samples at the Sömmeringhalle.

Starting at 2:00 p.m., we’ll hold a panel discussion on sustainability in sports. Under the motto “Fair in the Game, Fair in Life—Basketball with a Purpose,” we’ll discuss first steps toward a fairer sport and how a club can credibly champion sustainable values in the long term—regardless of results on the court.
