In the organizer's words:

A Journey Through Your Own Family Photo Album
For one person at a time (with a companion if desired), ages 14 and up

We all have and are familiar with family photos. We often take them at face value—based on what we see on the surface and the context our family has provided us—but what else might lie beneath the surface, hidden from view at first glance?

Participants sign up for an individual slot, bring a family photo (and a companion, if desired), and embark on a journey into the image through an interview. The answers complete the image, which is then “painted over” live.

Tina Campt on her practice “Listening to Images”:
“The practice ‘Listening to Images’ is about encouraging people to think differently about things they take for granted. It’s an invitation to connect things that seemingly don’t make sense. It may seem counterintuitive to use a sense other than sight to engage with or respond to images. But by extending this invitation, I’m asking people to open themselves up to the diversity of reactions that images evoke in us. And this happens beyond what we think we see; we react to an enormous number of stimuli and memories.
It’s about experiencing images as if they were sounds. And if you think about how we encounter sounds—because sound is actually resonance—then, in order for us to hear it, the sound must make physical contact with us, with our eardrums, with our bodies. And my invitation to “listen” to the images is precisely this: to open ourselves up to what it means to physically encounter the things we see, and to allow them to penetrate us, to resonate within us, to vibrate with us.”

Note: On Sat, Oct. 24, and Sun, Oct. 25, Theater TIER will present the production “My Grandpa on the Marshall Islands.” Tickets are also available at rausgegangen.de.
