FatJazz meets JazzHall Ensemble - QUINTET JEAN-PAUL

In the organizer's words:

The new FatJazz format presents in the 1st set mainly master students of the jazz studies program with their own compositions. This JazzHall ensemble meets 10 times a semester and rehearses complex modern arrangements under the direction of Gabriel Coburger.

In the 2nd set of the evening, the FatJazz urban exchange series - directed by Oliver Nerlich and Gabriel Coburger - introduces another modern jazz band.

Saxophonist and flutist Gabriel Coburger has been shaping the Hamburg jazz scene for decades - interrupted only by a stay in New York between 1997 and 2001 - and is, among other things, a member of the NDR Big Band. He leads several ensembles, with Quintet Jean Paul standing out due to Coburger's U.S. singer and frontline partner Ken Norris. A self-confessed improviser whose silky baritone recalls the versatile style of Kurt Elling, Norris often eschews conventional lyrics and instead acts like an instrumentalist, with wordless solos that caress Coburger's fiery lines with lush harmonies and unfold in finely tuned interplay with the leader. The quintet's music is steeped in modernist post bop, with the powerful rhythm section of pianist Mattie Winnitzki, bassist Sven Kerschek and drummer Konrad Ullrich intuiting a supple foundation that supports and propels the frontline in equal measure - whether with softer tones in ballads or crashing grooves.
