Thomas Stölting reflects on the Spanish Civil War and examines its causes, its course, and how it is (or is not) remembered today. In doing so, he makes it clear: Hitler’s Germany made this war possible in the first place. The author deliberately focuses on the internal logic of Spanish society, its divisions, its power dynamics, and its lingering conflicts. Stölting traces who instigated the violence and strategically drove it forward. He also describes why a historically critical reappraisal is indispensable and how it can be achieved.
