Successful businesswoman Romy (Nicole Kidman) has long been unfulfilled by her sex life. With her theater director husband Jacob (Antonio Banderas), things are dead in bed. She is longing for an adventure - and this comes in the form of the new intern Samuel (Harris Dickinson), who uses an inappropriate commanding tone towards his boss, but triggers a sexual desire in his superior. His impertinence towards Romy slowly increases - the two of them feel out their new roles together. When they finally meet for the first time in a hotel, neither of them is sure what kind of game they are actually playing.
