The virtuoso puppeteer Nikolaus Habjan has turned lengthy conversations with a survivor of the Nazi child euthanasia program into a moving evening of theater, which he is now presenting for the first time in Düsseldorf. Friedrich Zawrel (1929–2015) was taken to a Viennese hospital in 1943, where approximately 800 euthanasia killings of disabled and allegedly “hereditarily impaired” children took place. When his “doctor” at the time was put on trial decades later, the man claimed to remember nothing. It’s different for Friedrich Zawrel—his memories have given rise to this poignant evening filled with horror, “insults,” and tenderness.Nikolaus Habjan is a puppeteer, puppet maker, and director. He also devotes himself to the art of whistling. On October 3, he’ll take you on a whistled journey through three centuries of opera and operetta history: “Heiße Luft.”
