GHOST SCHOOL
In the organizer's words:
When Rabia learns that the only school in her village is closing, she begins to search for the reasons why. While the boys will be able to attend a school in the neighboring village in the future, the girls are denied this opportunity. In her search for answers, Rabia walks through the village and asks the adults. But instead of clarity, she encounters silence, evasive answers, and a rumor: that the school is cursed and the teacher is possessed by a jinn. The more persistently she presses for answers, the more she begins to doubt the stories meant to explain the school’s closure. Is there any truth to the rumor about the cursed school, or does it mask a completely different reality?
Inspired by Abbas Kiarostami’s “Where Is My Friend’s House?”, a young protagonist’s persistent search becomes the starting point for an exploration of social conditions. What begins as a seemingly simple question evolves into a journey through a labyrinth of superstition, authority, and corruption. A child’s perspective becomes a precise tool for revealing the contradictions within the community. Based on the real-life phenomenon of “ghost schools” in Pakistan, the film combines socially realistic observation with moments of magical realism.
