Arvo Pärt - Necrology op. 5
Leonard Bernstein - Symphonic Dances from West Side Story
---
The music of this great concert touches with its great topicality. The search for beauty and meaning in the face of violence and nihilism has always been the theme of music - as in Maurice Ravel's "Piano Concerto for the Left Hand", which he created for a pianist who was wounded in the war. The work comes to life this evening in the interpretation of pianist Kirill Gerstein, who, together with the Gewandhaus Orchestra, also presents Stravinsky's Concerto for Piano and Wind Instruments to the audience.
The thematic leitmotif of the concert continues in its second half - initially with the necrology of the current Gewandhaus composer Arvo Pärt. In the Soviet Union in 1961, he composed an indictment of violent political ideologies using the then revolutionary twelve-tone technique. In the same year, Leonard Bernstein took up the social tensions on the other side of the Atlantic with his Symphonic Dances, which he had already cast in the form of a musical in West Side Story.
