Democracy is under pressure worldwide. The media in particular are at the heart of this crisis: they are the gatekeepers of public debate, but are themselves coming under pressure due to commercialization, reach logic and dependence on digital platforms. In the USA, we can see how fake news, social media and polarized reporting are causing institutions to falter. At the same time, artificial intelligence is accelerating the spread of disinformation on an unprecedented scale. What responsibility do journalists bear, what role does independent quality journalism play - and how must politics and science react in order to maintain trust and ensure a fair culture of debate?
