Heba Y. Amin deals with political themes and archival history in her artistic work. She works with various media such as film, photography, archival material and installations. In her research-based art projects, she takes a speculative, often satirical approach to address power in relation to technology and its role in visual representation. Through her critical practice, Amin utilizes subversive tactics and other techniques that both challenge dominant historical narratives and attempt to define future histories.
In her Investigative Arts themed talk, Amin explores how digital colonialism shapes regimes of memory that enable the retroactive construction of evidence. Given the fragility and manipulability of historical materials - especially in digital form - she questions whose narratives are created and preserved when networks of visibility reinforce dominant power structures.
Heba Y. Amin is a professor of digital and time-based art at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart, co-founder of the Black Athena Collective, curator of visual art for MIZNA magazine and currently sits on the editorial board of the Journal of Digital War. She was awarded the Hans-Molfenter Prize/City of Stuttgart in 2025.
