One woman, one man, two apartments, and more than a dozen songs. That’s what makes up Stephen Sondheim’s two-person musical, originally titled “Marry Me a Little.” It’s about the desire to share one’s life with another person.

Coming to terms with one’s own longings and fears plays a central role. The relentless nature of the search the woman and man are on creates moments that are both lighthearted and melancholic. Missing the right moment—something people repeatedly experience in their search for the ideal partner—triggers various situations the protagonists must navigate. In the process, they realize that opening up to another person can sometimes be very challenging. The much-vaunted magic of the beginning simply refuses to materialize for these two. After numerous attempts and some back-and-forth, things finally turn out as they should: all’s well that ends well? 

Stephen Sondheim’s music represents a powerful, distinctive language that sets itself apart from stereotypical musical forms in the genre of the musical. With subtle expression and a clear message, Sondheim addresses the sensitive topic of loneliness and the often secretly cherished desire to be with someone. In doing so, he relies on the power of the music, which is not contrasted by any dialogue.
