The world is in a state of perpetual crisis, in which mutual humanization across identity categories and political differences seems increasingly impossible.
Conventional discourses on morality and values are increasingly failing. Instead, we must fundamentally improve our understanding of human nature and the brain behind it: What happens in the brain when we feel fear of strangers, dehumanize our opponents, or fear a liberal, open future? What political and artistic language can be used to address—and even change—these cognitive mechanisms? This lecture outlines a new political philosophy, grounded in our human neural and biological existence, with which we can tackle the difficult challenges of our time both cognitively and physically.
Dr. Liya Yu is a neuropolitical philosopher and political scientist. In her lectures, she combines insights from brain research with questions about democracy, social division, and solidarity. She explains why our political opponents often seem so alien to us—and how a new understanding of our thinking can help us overcome polarization and dehumanization.
