In Between Spaces – Kunstausstellung im S4.17
In the organizer's words:
In Between Spaces – Art Exhibition at S4.17
What happens between two states? Between closeness and distance, inside and outside, the visible and the hidden? That is precisely where“In Between Spaces”comes in.
FromOctober 15 to November 14, 2026,wieArt Rhein-Neckar e.V.invites youtoS4.17 in Mannheimto an exhibition that views the in-between space not as a void, but as a place where something can emerge.
Thirteen artistic approachescome together in painting, sculpture, textiles, mosaics, and object art. Different materials, styles, and perspectives interact with one another—sometimes subtly, sometimes directly, sometimes surprisingly.
Featured artists include:
AuroraGen · Sabrina Ferwagner · Jessica Marquardt · Tina Marseille · Jutta Neuhaus · Hans-Ulrich Neumann · Kerstin Neumann · Hanne Plattner · Carmen Monika Schlund · Johanna Schmotzle · Anja Schreurs · Ute Schmitt · Frank Schulze
But“In Between Spaces”aims to be more than just an exhibition to be viewed. Over the course of four weeks, S4.17 will become a vibrant hub for art, encounters, and exchange.
The event kicks off with theopening reception on Thursday, October 15, at 7 p.m. Curator Sabrina Ferwagner will open the evening, followed byAlessia Tardivo, who will introduce the exhibition and the various artistic perspectives in her laudatory speech.
There’s plenty more to discover afterward: a“One Spoon” event—a culinary journey through wild herbs, flowers, and unique flavors; anurban sketchwalk through Mannheim; the reading of “Der Wurm” with Barbara Imgrund, and theclosing event featuring an awards ceremony and musical accompaniment by Heike Süßdorf and Ute Schleich.
In this way, new spaces in between are constantly emerging—between art and the audience, between seeing and experiencing, between people who may be meeting each other for the very first time right here.
“In Between Spaces”invites you to look beyond the obvious—to what lies in between.

*** October 23, 6:30 p.m. - ONE SPOON
- A whole new world of flavors, spoon by spoon
Can a single spoon open up a whole new world?
That’s exactly the moment ONE SPOON creates—not with images, but with taste, right in the MIDDLE of the art exhibition at S4.17!
Jochen Schulz is the man behind the Mannheim-based micro-manufactoryJochen Cooks For You. Just outside the city, he hand-picks wild herbs, flowers, and fruits and transforms them into special creations—from wild garlic capers and black walnuts to pestos, fermented foods, and spice pastes, all the way to syrups and spirits.
AtONE SPOON, Jochen becomes a flavor artist: on every spoon, he crafts a little island of delight using his specialties, fresh herbs, and select ingredients. Sometimes spicy, sometimes wild, sometimes sweet, sometimes completely unexpected—and always with a story! Not a traditional menu, but a guided journey of flavors that surprises, enlightens, and gives you new culinary ideas to take home.
Seating is intentionally limited to ensure you can enjoy this experience in an intimate setting
€25 per person, including water and 1 aperitif; additional drinks available for an extra charge

*** October 24, 2:00–6:00 p.m. – SKETCHWALK – Seeing Mannheim in a New Light
Featuring a pop-up exhibition & audience voting. Open to everyone.
On theUrban Sketchers MannheimSketchwalk, we’ll goon a drawing-based discovery tour of Mannheim together.
The focus is on in-between spaces: transitions, passageways, breaks, and places that are easily overlooked in everyday life.
After a brief introduction, we’ll set off on an open sketchwalk through the city. Both experienced sketchers and curious newcomers are welcome to join. You’re free to choose your own materials and techniques.
At the end, we’ll gather for a group “throwdown” and discussion at the exhibition.
Anyone who wishes to do so can subsequently display a selected sketch in a temporary pop-up exhibition. The audience will choose their favorite based on the question: “Which sketch conveys the strongest impression of a Mannheim ‘interstitial space’?”
The audience award will be presented during the closing event on November 14.

Presentation of the Audience Award for the Urban Sketching Event
One last glance. One last sound. One last moment together.
For four weeks, IN BETWEEN SPACES brought people together, shifted perspectives, and forged new connections.
The group exhibition organized by wieArt Rhein-Neckar e. V. brings together 13 artists who, through sculpture, painting, textile art, mosaics, and wall installations, focus on those in-between spaces where something new can emerge.
Now we cordially invite you to join us in bringing this special chapter to a close.
Look forward to an atmospheric afternoon filled with art, encounters, and music.
Heike Süßdorf & Ute Schleich will accompany the closing event with violin and flute, lending the exhibition’s finale a special musical atmosphere.
Another highlight is the presentation of the Audience Choice Award for our Urban Sketching project. Which sketch most impressively captured the spirit of Mannheim’s in-between spaces? Together, we’ll celebrate the winner.
We’ll also look back on an exhibition that was far more than just a presentation of artworks: readings, urban sketching, culinary experiences, music, conversations, and many inspiring encounters have made IN BETWEEN SPACES a vibrant place of exchange.
Let’s celebrate this special moment together—with a glass in hand, music in our ears, and one last tour of the exhibition.
