The exhibition focuses on logistics, supply chains, and global flows of goods. Its starting point is the “Belt and Road Initiative,” an intercontinental logistics infrastructure that China has been expanding worldwide since 2013. It is also known as the “New Silk Road.” Duisburg and the Ruhr region are located at one of its ends.

Together with 23 artists from 16 countries, we journey along this new infrastructure of the global economy, which significantly shapes our lives without us really noticing it. The exhibition deals with deserts crossed, borders crossed, jobs lost and gained, and unloaded containers. All of this is staged using the very tools of logistics itself—glass transport racks and Monobloc chairs, the world’s best-selling piece of furniture, manufactured in China. Globalization is not abstract. It is out there, on the rails.

The exhibitionINDUSTRIAL: Silk Roads 3000has a double title.Silk Roads 3000sounds like science fiction, like an exotic place in a distant future. In reality, however, the Silk Roads have never disappeared; they have merely changed in form, scope, and pace. Instead of caravans laden with precious silk crossing the deserts of Central Asia, today trains, trucks, and container ships transport oil, grain, raw materials, spare parts, and industrial goods—the very things that make up our daily lives.

The exhibition is titledINDUSTRIAL because this contemporary reality is industrially shaped—in the form of a vast but largely invisible logistics network—and has geopolitical implications.
