After graduating from college, he spontaneously decided in April 1992 to leave his former life behind. He donated his savings of $25,000 and burned his last cash. He hitchhiked to Alaska to hike alone in the wilderness north of Mount McKinley. Four months later, his body was found by a moose hunter. In his non-fiction novel of the same name, Jon Krakauer (“On the Road to Cold Mountain”) uses diary entries, conversations, and postcards to piece together the life and death of Christopher McCandless. Sean Penn (“The Pledge”) directed this film, his fourth as a director, which is both a sensitive character study and a gripping survival drama.
